Von Willebrand Disease Research Gets Active

The first serious efforts to develop long-acting subcutaneous preventive treatments for VWD are taking place. VGA039 is a subcutaneous antibody designed to enhance clot formation by targeting protein “S.” It received FDA Fast Track designation and has progressed into a Phase 3 prophylaxis study for VWD. Unlike replacement therapy, it would not require directly supplying VWF. Other studies include: HMB-002, an experimental injected antibody designed to increase the patient’s own circulating VWF and factor VIII. A Phase 1/2 study is evaluating its safety and activity in people with VWD; and ALN-6400, an investigational RNA-interference treatment being studied particularly for VWD-associated heavy menstrual bleeding. A Phase 2 study is now listed.
